Spinnaker Stripe is named for the billowing sail rather than the wind, the lightest and most straightforward of the printed stripes in the Westerly collection: a single colour on a plain 100 per cent cotton ground, with none of the jute texture that runs through several of its collection-mates. It has a clean, crisp quality that suits a more contemporary room as easily as a traditional one, and it is the stripe we reach for when a cloth needs to stay light in both weight and mood.

It is 134 centimetres wide with a 22.5 centimetre horizontal repeat and no vertical one, since the stripe runs the length of the cloth. It is recommended for curtains, loose and fixed upholstery and bedspreads. There is one colourway, Indigo/Red, a workable navy and a soft red on a pale ground, close in spirit to Shelter Stripe and Westerly Stripe but lighter in weight and printed rather than woven, which suits it to rooms that see more casual, everyday use.

We would hang it as curtains in a bathroom or a child's bedroom, where a lighter cloth is welcome, or use it on a Roman blind in a kitchen. It also makes a fresh, unlined summer curtain, or a simple cushion cover for a window seat. Pair it with Compass Check or Falmouth Stripe from the same Westerly range, or with a plain linen. Sold by the half metre; order a sample to see it in your own light.

A making-up note: cut on the stripe rather than the selvedge, and match it across the leading edges of a pair of curtains and any seam on upholstery. Being lighter than the jute stripes in the same collection, it takes a soft, unlined heading particularly well, and gathers more generously too. Dry clean only; do not wash, bleach or iron.
