Stony Stripe is a woven cotton and jute stripe, the most textural piece in Westerly Stripes, with the jute giving the cloth a dry, slightly rustic grain and a visible slub that a printed stripe cannot match. The stripe is woven into the cloth rather than laid on top of it, so it looks the same from both sides and wears well at a seam. It has the practical, outdoorsy character of an old deckchair or awning canvas, brought in from the terrace and given a proper job indoors.

The composition is 70 per cent cotton and 30 per cent jute, the width 132 centimetres, with a 9 centimetre vertical repeat and a 26 centimetre horizontal one, so the stripe has a little more going on than a single flat band. It is recommended for curtains, loose and fixed upholstery and bedspreads. There is one colourway, Rust/Blue, a warm terracotta and an inky blue on a natural ground, a pairing that sits happily with brass, old leather and a stone floor.

We use a stripe like this on a hall bench, a window seat, or the seat and back of a set of kitchen chairs, and as an unlined summer curtain in a bedroom or a garden room. On a sofa it is a good outside back and arm cloth for a front upholstered in one of Mulberry's florals. Sold by the half metre; order a sample to see it in your own light.

A making-up note: ask your maker to cut on the stripe rather than the selvedge, since woven stripes can wander slightly across a width, and to match it carefully across any seams or cushion borders. Jute does not take kindly to water, so the cloth must be dry cleaned, and curtains should be lined to protect it from strong, direct sun.
