Summer Fireworks is an embroidered floral whose name tells you the mood: heads of bloom that open like bursts of light, stitched in polyester and viscose thread onto a cotton and linen ground so they stand up from the cloth and catch the light. It is a large, exuberant design with a 79 centimetre repeat, and it is the most obviously joyful thing in the collection. From a distance it reads as needlework; close to, the individual stitches are the point.

The composition is 36 per cent polyester, 34 per cent cotton, 17 per cent viscose and 13 per cent linen. It is 124 centimetres wide, which is narrower than the prints, with a 79 centimetre vertical repeat and a 62 centimetre horizontal one, and it is recommended for curtains and bedspreads. There are two colourways: Ochre, a single warm gold on natural, and Multi, where the blooms are worked in several colours at once. Multi is the one for a room with a lot of white; Ochre for one with old timber.

We would put it on a pair of curtains in a garden room or a bedroom, or on a bedspread with the walls papered in a small sprig. A single panel used as a wall hanging behind a bed is a thing we have done more than once. It wants plains around it, in linen or wool. Sold by the half metre; order a sample to see it in your own light.

A making-up note: at 124 centimetres wide and with a 79 centimetre repeat you will need more widths and more length than you expect, so have your maker calculate before you order and add a full repeat per drop. Line and interline, press only from the reverse over a soft cloth, and keep it out of direct sun. Dry clean professionally.
