Tapton Stripe is another of the woven cotton and jute stripes in Mulberry's Bohemian Travels book, close in spirit to Dalton Stripe but set at a wider, more relaxed repeat. The jute content gives the cloth a dry, slightly rustic texture and a visible slub in the weave, and because the pattern is woven rather than printed it is identical on both faces, so there is no wrong side to worry about when it is used for something reversible like a cushion or a runner.

The composition is 53 per cent cotton and 47 per cent jute, close to an even split, which gives the cloth real substance in the hand. It is 137 centimetres wide, with a 45 centimetre horizontal repeat running down the length. It is recommended for curtains and upholstery. There are two colourways, Teal/Russet and Teal/Indigo, both pairing the same warm teal ground with a different, cooler or warmer contrast stripe.

We use it much as we use the rest of the Bohemian Travels stripes: on a window seat, a footstool, or the outside back of a chair whose front is in one of the collection's prints. It also makes an easy, unlined curtain for a garden room or a summer bedroom. Pair it with a plain linen or one of Mulberry's Bohemian prints in a related colour. Sold by the half metre; order a sample to see it in your own light.

Cut on the stripe rather than the selvedge, and match it carefully across any seam, particularly where a piece of furniture has two visible sides. Jute can shrink a little in damp conditions, so have it dry cleaned rather than washed, and keep steam away from the face of the cloth.
