Torridon takes its name from the ancient, weathered mountains of the Scottish Highlands, and the pattern has something of that landscape in it: a rugged, mottled texture printed on smooth non-woven paper, closer to a piece of striated stone than a conventional repeat. It belongs to Bohemian Romance, and it is the most understated design in the collection, built entirely from tone rather than motif.

The paper is 100 per cent non-woven, 68.5 centimetres wide, with a 52 centimetre vertical repeat. There are three colourways, all built around neutral, smoky tones: Charcoal is the darkest and most dramatic; Woodsmoke sits in the middle, a soft warm grey; and Silver/Grey is the palest, with a fine metallic thread running through the texture that catches the light. Silver/Grey is the one we use most often, since it behaves almost like a plain.

We would paper a whole sitting room or a principal bedroom in it, letting the texture do the work while curtains and upholstery carry the pattern, or use Charcoal on a single wall behind a bed for real depth. It is an easy paper to build a whole scheme around, since it never competes with anything else in the room. Sold by the roll; order a sample before committing to a full room.

Hanging note: as a non-woven paper it is normally pasted to the wall and hung dry; check the leaflet in the roll for the paste and match. As a rule of thumb, a standard 10 metre roll gives three drops at 2.4 metres, so a 4 metre wall takes two rolls. Buy from a single batch, since a textural paper like this shows the smallest shift in tone between batches.
