Walton is a fine, small-scale weave from Modern Country Weaves, a soft grain worked from a blend of merino and standard wool that gives the cloth real softness alongside its durability. The repeat is a neat 10 centimetre square, close enough to read as a texture rather than a pattern, in the tradition of a good birdseye or fine houndstooth. It is the kind of cloth that anchors a scheme without ever being noticed for itself.
The composition is 50 per cent merino wool and 50 per cent wool, 150 centimetres wide, with a 10 centimetre repeat both vertically and horizontally. It is recommended for curtains, loose and fixed upholstery and bedspreads. There are four colourways: Shingle, a warm, pebble-toned neutral; Indigo, the deepest and most versatile; Stone, the palest; and Soft Teal, the only cool colour with any real presence.
We would use it as a plain partner to a Mulberry floral or check, on a sofa or an armchair that needs to recede rather than lead, or as curtains in a study or a hall. The merino content gives it a little more softness against the hand than a standard wool, which makes it pleasant on a loose cover or a bedspread. Sold by the half metre; order a sample to see it in your own light.
A making-up note: with a repeat this small, estimate quantities much as you would for a true plain, though it is still worth keeping the weave direction consistent across a set of chairs. Wool takes a light steam well but must be dry cleaned rather than washed, and it is a reliable, hardwearing choice for everyday upholstery in a family room.
