Wayfarer Stripe is a printed cotton from Mulberry's Westerly Stripes book, a bold, close band of colour that sits somewhere between a stripe and a check, since the repeat works in both directions rather than running only down the length. It has a dry, matt cotton hand and a graphic confidence that suits a room that wants a bit of energy, without the cost or complexity of a proper woven check.

It is a 100 per cent cotton cloth, 134 centimetres wide, with a 15 centimetre vertical repeat and a 16.8 centimetre horizontal one, close enough in both directions that the pattern reads almost square from a normal viewing distance. It is recommended for curtains and upholstery. There is one colourway, Blue/Red, a confident navy and red combination that we place happily against white paintwork, brass fittings or a plain stone floor.

We would use it for curtains in a boot room, a study or a boy's bedroom, or on a window seat cushion where the graphic scale earns its keep. It also makes a good bench cushion in a hall or a runner-style seat pad on a kitchen chair. Pair it with a plain linen or wool rather than another patterned cloth. Sold by the half metre; order a sample to see it in your own light.

Because the repeat works in both directions, treat it like a check for matching purposes: ask your maker to centre a full motif on each curtain and to line the pattern up horizontally across the pair as well as vertically down the drop. On upholstery, match carefully across any seam, particularly where two pieces of furniture sit side by side. Dry clean only; do not wash, bleach or iron.
