Wicket is an embroidery from the Country Walk collection, its name borrowed from the wicket gate at the edge of an English garden, and the stitching has the same unassuming charm: small motifs worked in an acrylic yarn onto a linen ground, so the pattern sits proud of the cloth rather than printed flat on it. It has the loose, hand-worked look of a piece of country needlework rather than a formal crewel design.

The ground is 62 per cent linen, with the remaining 38 per cent a polyacrylic yarn that carries the embroidery and gives it a gentle sheen against the matt linen. It is 134 centimetres wide with a 19 centimetre vertical repeat and a 34 centimetre horizontal one, and it is recommended for curtains rather than upholstery, in keeping with most embroideries of this kind. Three colourways: Green/Blue is the cool, gardenish one; Teal/Red pulls in a warmer accent; and Spice is the single warm tone, good against old oak.

We would hang it as curtains in a cottage sitting room or a country kitchen, interlined so the stitching has some body behind it, and keep the walls and seating plain so the embroidery reads clearly. It also makes a pretty panel behind a bed, in place of a full bedspread. Pair it with a plain linen or one of the small Country Walk prints. A making-up note: embroideries need lining and, ideally, interlining, both to protect the stitching and to give the curtain enough weight to hang properly. Allow one full repeat per drop for matching, and ask your maker to press only from the reverse, over a towel, so the threads are not flattened. It must be dry cleaned professionally, never ironed on the face.
