Wood Panel does exactly what its name suggests: it prints the shadow and grain of traditional wainscoting onto a smooth non-woven paper, so a plain wall reads as panelled joinery without the carpentry. It belongs to Bohemian Romance, and it is a clever, practical way to bring the architecture of an older house into a newer or plainer room, at a fraction of a joiner's time and cost.
The paper is 100 per cent non-woven, 52 centimetres wide, with a 52 centimetre repeat, so the panels line up straight across each drop. There are four colourways: Dove Grey and Parchment are the two soft neutrals, easy to run through a whole house; Rust is warmer and more architectural, suited to a hall or a dining room; and Lichen is the quiet green, good behind a bed or in a bathroom.
We would use it below a dado rail in a hall or a stairwell, on all four walls of a small dining room, or as a panelled backdrop to a bed with the headboard upholstered in a plain linen. It is a simple way to add proportion and formality to a room that lacks either. Sold by the roll; order a sample before committing to a full room.
Hanging note: as a non-woven paper it is normally pasted to the wall and hung dry; check the leaflet in the roll for the paste and match, and take particular care to keep the first drop plumb, since a panel effect shows any lean more readily than a floral. As a rule of thumb, a standard 10 metre roll gives three drops at 2.4 metres, so a 4 metre wall takes three rolls. Buy from a single batch.
