Nina Campbell | Barbary Toile

Barbary Toile is a scenic paper in painterly monochrome, an affectionate nod to the monkeys of the Rock of Gibraltar. It works the way the best toiles always have, small vignettes repeated across the wall in a single colour, so the pattern is busy in incident yet calm in effect, and the wit of the subject reveals itself slowly, one monkey at a time.

It is made in the United Kingdom. Because the drawing is held in one tone, it behaves almost as a texture at a distance, which makes it easier to use than its subject suggests, cloakrooms, studies, landings and spare bedrooms all take it well, and it needs only plain cloths beside it.
