Nina Campbell | Bertin

Bertin is an indienne-inspired stripe: bands of stylised flowers, carnations among them, alternating with trails of leaf and lotus motifs, in the manner of the painted and printed cottons that arrived in France from India in the seventeenth century. The stripes are irregular and the drawing lively, so it feels collected rather than manufactured, and it brings a good deal of colour into a room in a controlled way.

The cloth is a linen-cotton blend, 51 per cent linen, 37 per cent cotton and 12 per cent polyamide, printed in the United Kingdom, and it has a dry, slightly crisp hand. It is 140 centimetres wide with a 38 centimetre vertical repeat set half-drop and a 28 centimetre horizontal repeat; at 230 grams per square metre and 60,000 rubs it is the hardest-wearing print in the Dauphine collection and entirely suitable for upholstery as well as curtains, blinds and cushions. It complies with BS 5852 cigarette.

Four colourways: Red / Blue is the classic indienne pairing; Teal / Russet is warm and autumnal; Green / Yellow is fresh; Indigo / Chocolate is the darkest and most sophisticated. We would use Bertin on a sofa in a country sitting room, as a bed hanging, or as a pair of curtains in a room otherwise kept plain, where the stripe gives it a spine. Note the half-drop repeat when estimating quantities. Dry clean is recommended. Sold by the half metre; samples are available.

The half-drop repeat needs to be allowed for when estimating for curtains, and the stripe should be centred on a sofa or a headboard so the floral bands sit symmetrically. Bertin is happy alongside checks and plain linens, and it brings a genuine warmth to a room that is otherwise quite pared back.
