Nina Campbell | Boscobel Wallpaper

Boscobel is a 1930s floral chintz of roses and trumpet flowers from the archive, reimagined as a wallpaper. The drawing has the full-blown, slightly theatrical quality of the best chintzes of that decade, with large blooms, generous foliage and a confident sense of colour, and it is the most decorative and the most nostalgic of the Dauphine papers. Hung with conviction it is glorious; used timidly it loses its point.

Printed in the United Kingdom on a 52 centimetre wide roll of 9 metres, with a large 66 centimetre straight-match repeat to be allowed for when estimating. It carries the European B-s1,d0 fire classification and the American ASTM E-84 Class A rating. The finish is matt.

Four colourways: Duck Egg / Teal / Pink is the freshest and the most obviously 1930s; Coral / Green is warm and summery; Pink / Teal is the prettiest and the one for a bedroom; Chocolate / Rose is the surprise of the group, the roses set against a deep brown ground so the paper becomes rich and enveloping, very good in a small dining room or a snug. Boscobel wants a room where it can be hung on every wall and the furniture kept plain and slightly old-fashioned: a bedroom with a brass bed, a bathroom with a roll-top, a country kitchen. It takes a plain painted or dark-stained woodwork and looks best with linen or velvet rather than another print. Sold by the roll; order a sample to see the blooms at full scale before committing.

A chintz paper of this scale needs a room to breathe in, and a wall long enough to show at least two full repeats across; it is not a paper for a single feature wall. Hung generously, in a room with soft lighting and simple furniture, Boscobel is one of the most charming papers Nina Campbell has produced in years.
