Celendin is a stylised tree of life woven as a jacquard, the branching forms climbing the cloth in the manner of the great Indian palampores that have inspired English decorating for three centuries. The name, borrowed from a province and city in northwest Peru, hints at the design's travelled, collected character.
Woven in France at 137 centimetres from a blend of linen, cotton, viscose and polyamide, the jacquard structure gives the pattern a soft relief that catches the light. With a Martindale result of 20,000 rubs it is best kept for curtains, blinds and cushions, where the drawing can be seen at full drop.
