Nina Campbell | Coromandel

Coromandel is an embroidered floral trail of Jacobean origin, redrawn for the present with metallic yarns worked over a contrasting linen-mix ground. The stitching gives the trail genuine relief, and the metallic thread lifts it further, catching light as the surface moves. It is named after the south-east coastal region of India, where the fabric is made.

The ground is 70 per cent linen and 30 per cent viscose, woven 127 centimetres wide. Embroidery of this kind is best where it can be admired and gently treated, so it favours curtains, blinds and cushions, with upholstery reserved for occasional chairs and headboards rather than the family sofa.
