Nina Campbell | Fener Grove

Fener Grove is a large-scale embroidered design of trees and decorative flowers, reminiscent of Mughal miniature paintings, worked in hand-guided crewel stitches with contouring cord-couching on a cotton-linen ground. The cord traces the outlines while the crewel fills them, so the design is genuinely sculptural, drawing rendered in thread. It is named after a historic Byzantine garden in Istanbul, built for the Empress Theodora.

It is embroidered in India on a mixed ground of polyester, cotton, linen and viscose, 138 centimetres wide and weighty at 546 grams per square metre. Handwork of this order should be displayed rather than worn, full-length curtains above all, panels, headboards and cushions, with upholstery reserved for occasional show pieces.
