Nina Campbell | Lamballe

Lamballe is the embroidered centrepiece of the Dauphine collection: branching leaves and flowers climbing an undulating stem, worked in graduated tones of thread so the design has real depth and movement across the cloth. The stitching sits proud of a linen-rich ground, and because the pattern is all-over rather than confined to a border, it can be used generously without looking busy.

The ground is 63 per cent linen with 26 per cent viscose and 11 per cent polyester, which gives the embroidery a stable base and a soft, slightly slubbed texture between the motifs. The cloth is 125 centimetres wide with a 38 centimetre vertical and 41 centimetre horizontal repeat, and it weighs 354 grams per square metre. It is embroidered in India. As with most embroideries it is intended for curtains, blinds, cushions and light decorative upholstery, headboards and screens rather than everyday seating; it is treatable to BS 5867 Part 2 Type B for curtain use.

Four colourways: Duck Egg is the soft, tonal one and the most restful; Eucalyptus / Ivory and Blue / Ivory set the design against a pale ground so the stems read clearly; Yellow is the sunniest and works well in a room that lacks light. We would use Lamballe as a pair of unlined or lightly interlined curtains in a bedroom, as a set of large cushions against a plain sofa, or on a headboard where the texture of the embroidery can be seen close to. Dry clean is recommended. Sold by the half metre, with samples available.

Embroideries should be lined and, ideally, interlined when used as curtains so the stitching does not show through in daylight, and they should always be dry cleaned rather than washed. Lamballe also has a printed wallpaper counterpart in six colourways, four of which match the fabric exactly, for a room that wants the design on the walls too.
