Nina Campbell | Mardi Gras

Mardi Gras is a large-scale embroidered chevron worked in variegated colour on a linen union ground, its zig-zag evoking the flamboyance of a Caribbean island festival. The stitching gives the chevron a hand-worked energy that a printed version could never quite manage.

Embroidered in India at 130 centimetres, the cloth blends viscose, linen and cotton, the union ground giving it a dry, sturdy character beneath the threadwork. As an embroidery it is best suited to curtains, blinds and cushions, and to occasional chairs kept from daily wear; used at a window, the bold chevron brings rhythm and spirit to a room.
