Nina Campbell | Michelham

Michelham is an informal array of floral sprays, fan flowers, violas and pansies among them, embroidered on a linen ground, so the flowers are built up in thread with real relief rather than printed flat. The informality is deliberate, sprays scattered as though pressed into a book rather than arranged into a repeat.

It is embroidered in India on a cloth of 70 per cent linen and 30 per cent viscose, 136 centimetres wide and substantial at 540 grams per square metre.

Like most dense embroideries it is best where it is seen and gently used, curtains, blinds, cushions, headboards and occasional chairs, rather than on seating that works hard every day.
