Nicolet is a bold fretwork stripe drawn from ornamental metalwork, the kind of scrolled iron seen on a French balcony or a garden gate, with a worn patina worked into the print so the lines are not too crisp. It is the graphic, architectural design in the Dauphine collection and gives a room structure without resorting to a plain geometric.

It is printed in Austria on a textured 100 per cent cotton that has been chosen specifically for upholstery, 140 centimetres wide, with a 34 centimetre vertical and 48 centimetre horizontal repeat. At 406 grams per square metre it is the heaviest of the Dauphine prints and at 50,000 rubs it is well suited to sofas, armchairs and dining chairs as well as curtains, blinds and cushions. It complies with BS 5852 cigarette.

Four colourways: Red is the most traditional and the strongest; Beige / Duck Egg is the soft neutral; Teal / Green is rich and slightly exotic; Blue / Taupe the most restrained. Because the fretwork runs as a vertical stripe, Nicolet is particularly successful as curtains, where the scrolls fall in long columns, and on the outside back of a chair. It has a matching wallpaper in three of the colourways for anyone who wants the stripe to carry from the walls to the furniture. Dry clean is recommended. Sold by the half metre, with samples available.

The texture of the cotton gives Nicolet a firmer hand than the other Dauphine prints, and it makes up crisply on a tailored piece, a sofa with a straight back, a dining chair or a bench. We would avoid gathering it heavily; a flat Roman blind or a pinch-pleat curtain shows the fretwork better than a full gather does.
