Nicolet wallpaper is a bold fretwork stripe taken from ornamental metalwork, the scrolled iron of a French balcony or gate, with a worn patina in the print so the lines are softened rather than mechanical. It is the architectural design in the Dauphine collection, and hung on a wall it gives a room strong vertical structure without the plainness of a conventional stripe.

Printed in the United Kingdom on a 52 centimetre wide roll of 9 metres, with a 38 centimetre straight-match repeat. It carries the European B-s1,d0 fire classification and the American ASTM E-84 Class A rating, and the finish is matt.

Three colourways, each matching the Nicolet upholstery cotton: Blue / Taupe is the most restrained and the easiest to live with; Beige / Duck Egg is the soft neutral; Teal / Green is rich and a little exotic, very good in a dining room by candlelight. The strong vertical makes this a natural paper for a hall, a stairwell or a study, and for rooms with lower ceilings where height is wanted. It pairs well with dark painted woodwork and with plain wool or linen upholstery; with the matching fabric on a chair it becomes a fully coordinated scheme in the traditional French manner. Sold by the roll; samples are available and worth ordering to see the patina effect, which gives the print its character and is lost on screen.

Nicolet is the paper to choose where the architecture is plain and some structure is wanted from the walls themselves. In a hall or on a staircase it should be hung with the scrolls running unbroken from floor to ceiling, and it looks best with a strong painted skirting and dado below.
