Nina Campbell | Pagelle

Pagelle arranges stylised floral posies and leafy trails within a subtle ogee framework, printed on coloured grounds that have been given the texture of antique linen. The ogee gives it a gentle architecture, so it is a floral that behaves like a trellis, and the tinted ground means it reads as a coloured cloth rather than a white one with pattern on it. It is quietly grand and very easy to live with.

The cloth is 100 per cent cotton, printed in the United Kingdom, 140 centimetres wide, with a 23 centimetre vertical and 28 centimetre horizontal repeat. It weighs 230 grams per square metre and is rated to 50,000 rubs, so it is a true dual-purpose fabric for curtains, blinds, cushions and upholstery, and it complies with BS 5852 cigarette. The printed linen texture hides wear well.

Four colourways, each named for its ground: Red is deep and warm; Aqua is soft and watery; Green is a mossy sage; Denim is a muted blue. Pagelle has a matching wallpaper in the same colours, and the pair make a very complete small room, a cloakroom, a guest bedroom or a dressing room, with the fabric at the window and on a chair. On its own, we would use it on a headboard with plain linen curtains, or as loose covers on dining chairs. Dry clean is recommended. Sold by the half metre; order a sample to see the ground colour, which is difficult to judge on screen.

The tinted ground on Pagelle means the fabric has a colour of its own, so it should be sampled against paint and against any other fabrics in the room. It takes a plain contrast piping well and can be railroaded on a long seat. With the Pagelle wallpaper it makes a complete scheme for a small room in the traditional manner.
