Nina Campbell | Paridaiza

Paridaiza gathers carpet motifs into a woven patchwork, each panel drawn from a different rug tradition and joined by the weave itself. The construction is tapestry-like, dense and flat, so the pattern has the settled, storied quality of a floor covering brought up onto furniture. The name comes from the Old Persian pairi-daeza, meaning paradise.

Woven in Turkey from viscose and polyester at 137 centimetres, the cloth is heavy and firm, made with upholstery in mind. A rub test of 18,000 handles general domestic seating, an armchair, an ottoman, a bench, and the patchwork format is forgiving of cuts and seams, since no single motif needs to be centred. On a plain sofa, a pair of cushions in it does the work of a shelf of kilims.
