Osborne & Little | Brae

Brae is a soft check in pure wool, its lines gently blended into one another so the grid reads as a haze of colour rather than a hard plaid. The cloth is brushed after weaving, which raises a light nap and gives it the relaxed, slightly felted character of a good country blanket. It is the lightest of the Rannoch Wools at 283 grams per square metre and the most versatile.

Woven in the United Kingdom from 100 per cent wool, it is 123 centimetres wide with a small 12 centimetre by 9.5 centimetre repeat, so there is very little waste and it is easy to match on cushions and small pieces. The 16,000 rub rating places it with light domestic upholstery, curtains, blinds, throws and cushions; it is not the cloth for a family sofa, but it is exactly right for a bedroom chair, a window seat or a lined curtain, where the brushed surface catches the light beautifully. It complies with BS 5852 cigarette and match for upholstery and can be treated for curtain use.

The five colourways are shared with its sister design Fyne, which makes the two easy to combine: Coral and Berry are warm and rosy, Olive is a soft moss, Charcoal / Chestnut is the tailored option and Leaf / Denim the fresher blue-green. We often use Brae for curtains and Fyne for the upholstery in the same room, or Brae as a throw over a plain bed. Dry clean is recommended. Sold by the half metre, and samples are available.

The brushed nap on Brae gives it a slight direction, so the cloth should be cut with the pile running the same way on every piece of a set of curtains or cushions. It is a good fabric for lampshades too, where the wool softens the light, and we can advise on lining and interlining for a lined pair.
