Osborne & Little | Fyne

Fyne is an asymmetric check woven in a twill, with the diagonal grain and the uneven spacing of the lines giving it the character of a tartan without the formality of one. It is a pure wool cloth, woven in the United Kingdom, and it has the dry, crisp hand of a good suiting rather than a soft blanket wool, which is why it tailors so well on furniture.

It is 152 centimetres wide, the widest in the Rannoch Wools collection, with a 21 centimetre vertical and 19 centimetre horizontal repeat that is easy to centre on a seat or a chair back. At 390 grams per square metre and 35,000 rubs it is comfortably suitable for general domestic upholstery as well as curtains and cushions, and it complies with BS 5852 cigarette and match. The twill weave means the check is slightly softened at the edges and the surface has a gentle diagonal sheen.

Six colourways are offered, five of which are shared with Brae so the two can be used together with confidence. Coral and Berry are the warm options; Olive and Leaf / Denim the green and blue-green ones; Charcoal / Chestnut is the tailored neutral, and Indigo is unique to Fyne, a deep navy check that works particularly well on a dining chair or a wing chair in a library. We like it on an occasional chair with a plain wool or linen on the sofa, or as a Roman blind in a study. Dry clean is recommended. Fyne is the workhorse of the collection and the one we would specify first for anyone wanting a wool check that will simply last. It cuts economically thanks to the 152 centimetre width, takes a leather or velvet piping well, and in Charcoal / Chestnut or Indigo it is a very good foil for antique furniture.
