Osborne & Little | Glencoe

Glencoe is a horizontal chevron with accent stripes and a bouclé yarn worked through it, so the zigzag has a raised, loopy texture rather than sitting flat. It is the most textural cloth in the Rannoch Wools group and the one that feels closest to a handwoven blanket. The chevron runs across the width, which makes it particularly good on a bench, a long sofa back or a bolster where the stripe can travel.

The composition is a considered mix: 37 per cent viscose for lustre and drape, 26 per cent wool for warmth and body, with linen, cotton, polyester, polyamide and acrylic making up the balance and giving the bouclé its structure. At 678 grams per square metre it is a substantial cloth, and it is rated to 18,000 rubs, which suits occasional and domestic seating, cushions, throws and curtains rather than hard-wearing contract use. It is 140 centimetres wide with a 32 centimetre vertical and 4 centimetre horizontal repeat.

Seven colourways give it unusual range for a textured weave. Ochre, Terracotta and Emerald are the saturated options; Aqua and Olive are softer; Charcoal and Indigo are the ones we reach for in a tailored, masculine room. Each is tonal, so the chevron reads as texture as much as pattern, and it sits very comfortably alongside a plain linen or a printed cotton. Dry clean is recommended. Sold by the half metre; a sample is the best way to judge the surface, which photographs flatter than it feels.

Because the bouclé loops sit proud of the surface, Glencoe benefits from a knitted or stretch lining on cushions and should be brushed rather than vacuumed hard. It also makes an unusually good throw, hemmed simply with a blanket stitch, in the darker colourways for a sitting room and Aqua or Olive for a bedroom.
