Kandy, named after the capital of the ancient kings of Sri Lanka, carries narrow horizontal stripes embroidered in multi-coloured threads, each band worked in a painterly manner and bordered with a running stitch, so the cloth has the intimacy of handwork.
Made in India on a ground of viscose, linen and cotton with polyester, it is 126 centimetres wide and 215gsm. The embroidery is best kept where it will be read rather than rubbed: curtains, blinds and cushions above all, with headboards and occasional chairs alongside.
