Osborne & Little | Kyle

Kyle is a large-scale check that combines broad blocks of colour with fine herringbone lines running through them, so it reads as a bold plaid from a distance and as a quietly detailed weave close to. It is the most generous of the Rannoch Wools in scale, with a 31 centimetre vertical and 69 centimetre horizontal repeat, and it rewards being used on a piece large enough to show a full block or two.

It is woven in Turkey from 85 per cent wool with a little polyester and polyamide for stability, and at 885 grams per square metre it is the heaviest cloth in the collection. The 100,000 rub rating means it will stand up to daily use on a sofa, a window seat or dining chairs without any concern. The width is 136 centimetres. Five colourways cover most palettes: Aqua / Ochre and Olive / Lagoon are the fresher, more unexpected pairings; Plum / Amber and Indigo / Caramel are warmer and more traditional; Linen / Snow is the quiet neutral of the group, a soft check for a bedroom or a pale scheme.

We would put Kyle on a deep armchair in a study, on a headboard, or as a heavy interlined curtain in a room that needs a little more warmth in winter. Because the herringbone is woven in rather than printed, the surface has a slight sheen that changes as the light moves across it. Dry clean is recommended. Sold by the half metre, with samples available so you can check the scale against your piece.

Kyle is a fabric to buy generously: the horizontal repeat is long, and centring the check on a sofa back or a pair of curtains will use more cloth than the bare measurements suggest.
