Simien is a flat-weave horizontal stripe interrupted by tufted squares and triangles, the raised motifs sitting on the surface like small pieces of pile scattered across a kilim. The contrast between flat ground and tufted relief gives the cloth a handmade, collected character.
Woven in Turkey from viscose with cotton, linen and polyester at 700 grams per metre, it is a substantial cloth with a firm ground and soft raised detail. A rub test of 45,000 clears the mark for serious upholstery service, so it will serve on sofas, benches and dining chairs, and at 140cm wide it also makes distinctive cushions and curtains.
