The pineapple was the king of fruits, and something of an obsession: from the second half of the seventeenth century European monarchs went to considerable trouble to raise them in thoroughly unsuitable climates. Braquenié's À la Table du Roi reproduces a document from the first half of the nineteenth century, printed here on cut pile, its colours unexpected rather than antiquarian. Céleste sets the motif against a cool blue ground.
