Alexandrie is printed on cotton from a gouache of the second half of the nineteenth century, preserved at the Musée de l'Impression sur Étoffes in Mulhouse. The drawing is representative of the Orientalist current of the Second Empire — a document of its period, reproduced with the fidelity a museum source deserves. What reaches the cloth is not pastiche but the thing itself: a design with the density and conviction of its era, carried forward intact.
