Aristoloches draws inspiration from a nineteenth-century tapestry cartoon preserved within the Pierre Frey archives, reimagining a design centred on cabbage leaf motifs that flourished during the Renaissance. Originally adorning castle interiors, such tapestries experienced renewed popularity during the Second Empire, when historicizing sensibilities pervaded the decorative arts. The wallpaper captures the gentle tonality of botanical forms whilst evoking the textural qualities inherent to its textile heritage, its design mounted on non-woven backing to create a design of considerable refinement and enduring appeal.
