Candide is the embroidered version of a printed and painted Indienne of the eighteenth century held in the Pierre Frey archives. Its particularity lies in the ground, which is actually a printed stripe — a detail much appreciated in Europe during the second half of the eighteenth century, and evidence that this Indienne was very likely designed for the European market.
