Coutances draws its inspiration from an eighteenth-century toile de Jouy, originally printed in 1792 at the celebrated Oberkampf manufactory in Jouy-en-Josas. Designed by Jean Baptiste Huet, the pattern depicts a charming pastoral scene of a drinking trough, rendered in the delicate, narrative style characteristic of the period.
