Pierre Frey | Ecailles – Marine

Ecailles works a scale motif in traditional Wilton weaving, a pattern with two distinct histories: it appears in eighteenth-century Indian palampores and again in the traditional arts of Japan. Repetition gives it calm; the curve of each scale keeps it from austerity. It is ornament of the most durable kind — old enough to be beyond fashion, simple enough to feel current.
