Farfalla is built around the shimmer of butterfly wings, and it gets there by construction rather than by colour: entirely hand-tufted, with loops at different levels, some matt and some lustrous, and pile in wool and bamboo cut to varying heights. The surface therefore changes as you cross it, closer to embroidery than to a woven carpet. Pierre Frey compares the effect to the exuberance of the Venetian carnival, which is fair.
