Gimignano is a ciselé velvet embroidered with crowns of leaves and scrolls, set into vertical stripes in a Florentine neoclassical manner. The design comes from a document held in the Pierre Frey archives. Cutting the pile is what makes it: the motifs stand clear of the ground in relief, so the pattern is legible by light and shadow as much as by any contrast of colour.
