Grenadier is a twentieth-century Pierre Frey archive, and its trick is negative drawing: hand-painted white outlines pick a pomegranate grove out of a dense forest, the fruit and the crumpled-petalled flowers emerging from the ground rather than being laid on top of it. Two colours only. It is printed in wide width on a glazed non-woven, which gives the whites a faint sheen and keeps the drawing crisp at scale.
