Ikat takes its name from the Malay mengikat, to bind: the warp skeins are bound and dyed before weaving, which is what produces the blurred edge the technique is known for. Kasuri — the Japanese word for ikat — sets out a pattern of irregular squares in that spirit, printed on a warp and then laminated to a non-woven backing. Designs of this kind run through Central and East Asian production, and appear to have developed in China around the sixth century.
