Kawachi, by Rachel Altabas, is a double homage: to Japan's Kawachi garden with its sublime wisteria tunnels, and to the spirit of Memphis design. Totems, or perhaps flasks, stand arranged on a soft cloud of a ground, and the house is content to leave the reading open, interpretation being as individual as the viewer. It is a genuinely original paper, playful without silliness, and a gift to rooms that enjoy conversation.
