La Singerie is a flat-frame print on cotton, an original creation in the singerie genre, the 'monkey business' that emerged late in the reign of Louis XIV and reached its height under Christophe Huet, with celebrated examples at Champs-sur-Marne, Thoiry and Chantilly. Mischievous monkeys play through the curved lines of the rococo, and beneath the festivity lies the genre's old double meaning: an allusion to the vanity of human existence, delivered with a smile.
