Les Elephants sits squarely within the Orientalist current of the second half of the nineteenth century, an interest fed by writers such as Lamartine in 1835 and Gerard de Nerval in 1851, and reflected in a profusion of decorative designs. This tiger-hunt scene has a precise domestic history: it decorated a bedspread in a house owned by the Le Manach family. A period document with provenance, carrying its exoticism in the manner of its time.
