Les Oisillons is a magnificent, expansive design combining foliage and animals, inspired by a motif created in the mid-twentieth century by Ella Maria Schmidl, an artist about whom little is known and who remains to be rediscovered. Her naive style is particularly enhanced by dense, textured hand embroidery, which gives the birds and leaves a physical, homespun richness. It is both a revival and an act of rescue, stitched with evident affection.
