Maipo is a plain with a slightly speckled, satin look — New Zealand wool velvet blended with a shiny yarn that catches the light without ever announcing itself. It is the kind of ground a room can be built on: not a pattern, not quite a flat plain either, but a surface with a gentle flicker to it. Underfoot it has the density of good wool velvet; in changing light it has rather more personality than the word plain suggests.
