Makemo is a contemporary creation inspired by the basketry fans of the Marquesas Islands. Hand-tufted in New Zealand wool, it is worked in loops that are then partially shaved, and that shift between cropped and looped pile is the whole design: it gives the surface the subtle changes of plane that woven basketry has, translated into wool. It is an homage that works through texture rather than imitation, and it rewards bare feet as much as the eye.
