Malatya is an embroidery inspired by a seventeenth-century Persian carpet motif preserved in the archives of the Maison Pierre Frey, offered either in contrast or tone on tone. The ground is a delicate cotton satin, dyed in harmony with the embroidery, and it is the completeness of the stitched covering that gives the cloth its particular aura — at a glance it carries itself like the most beautiful lampas, though every line of it is needlework.
