Maputo is graphic and dynamic: a modernist design of interlocking matt stripes created by Elise Djo-Bourgeois in 1927 and presented at the Salon des artistes décorateurs in Paris the following year. It is woven as a jacquard in the Pierre Frey workshops in northern France, which gives the drawing real cloth structure rather than a printed surface. Nearly a century on, its rhythm still feels current — proof of how far ahead she was working.
