Mercoeur is inspired by a gouache carpet design by Englinger from the 1930s, preserved in the Pierre Frey archives, and it draws its essence from the symmetrical elegance and geometric rigour of French formal gardens. Hand-knotted in Nepal, it is adorned with a trellis and stylised acanthus leaves reinterpreted in a contemporary manner. The whole evokes a garden in the French way: architectural discipline below, the movement of plants above.
