Niger is an African-inspired fabric edited by Le Manach for its first collection of toiles de Tours in 1928, reproducing the Kuba velvets of Congo. It takes its name from the use of curly raffia yarns — a distant echo, too, of Italian chiselled velvets — and that raffia surface is its signature: dry, textured, unmistakably handmade in feeling. A remarkable document of early modernist taste, still entirely at home today.
