Papillons - Moiré reproduces a very beautiful naturalistic document from the Louis XVI era, its composition notably well balanced. Butterflies were a favourite subject of that period's naturalism — ornament borrowed directly from observation — and here they alight on a moiré ground, whose watered shimmer sets the drawing in gentle movement. It is eighteenth-century delicacy with a live surface, equally at home on walls of fabric or fine upholstery.
