Parade Ottomane sets a procession of high dignitaries of the Ottoman Empire across a coloured ground, imagined from a series of lithographs reproducing the plates of Oriental Costumes, drawn by Lambert de Vos in 1574. It is decoration as pageant: figure after figure in ceremonial order, carrying four and a half centuries of documentary history in their robes. A narrative fabric of real scholarship, worn with complete ease.
